AMERICAN LEGION INMATES POST FORGED MEMORANDUM IN HOUSING AREAS TO DRUM UP MEMBERSHIP IN WHAT MANY DESCRIBE AS A PRISON GANG

On October 20, 2022 a sign-in memorandum was posted in housing units at the ISCC - on altered official stationery taken from an office area - which read:

MANDATORY VETERAN'S TRAINING
10/24 @ 2:00 PM - MILITARY VETERANS ONLY

Name/Room and Bunk / IDOC Number / Branch of Service

When questioned, housing staff had no idea where the memos came from, who posted them, or why. After inquiries up the chain of command as high as the Shift Commander, nobody had any idea of the source - or the meaning - of the memo/sign-up list which appeared to mandate that any prisoner who is a military veteran be present at some undisclosed location in 4 days for some sort of undescribed training.

Once the F block Sergeant arrived on the unit and reviewed the posted document, he too was perplexed, and declared the memo void. The sergeant then instructed the memos be removed from each of the tiers. It is still unclear how many other housing areas in the facility had these fake orders posted.

Later, after a bit more investigation, it was found that an inmate member of the American Legion had removed a sign-up document used by unit case managers from an office, altered the document on a copy machine ("whited out" portions of it) and wrote in the fictitious "Mandatory Training" jargon in an effort to surreptitiously identify military veterans who are not already part of the "gang" that is the American Legion at the ISCC in an effort to recruit them to join their ranks. It has not been disclosed at the time of this writing how many American Legion inmates were involved in this overt and serious security violation, or how far up the (inmate/Legion) chain-of-command the conspiracy originated, or who ordered it.

The fallout of the fraudulent memo acquisition (which declared a Level 3 [Restricted] Data Sensitivity Classification) and posting remains to be seen, though it's quite likely there will be little to no consequences for inmates involved with the Legion post due to administrative acquiescence, coddling and excuses made on behalf of its' inmate members without regard to the safety and security of other prisoners and staff at the facility.
